May 25, 2021 - Day Six, Flight One, Part Four
Last Chance Creek, Escalante Airport-Utah

Continuing west down Lake Powell/San Juan River.

A little marina somewhere off Lake Powell.

All the side canyons off Lake Powell are worthy of exploration.

If you get tired of flying in the canyons, you can fly above the flat mesas.

At some point, I turned north off Lake Powell into Last Chance Bay.   When Last Chance Bay turned into Last Chance Creek, I would follow the creek up to Escalante, Utah.  I had never flown Last Chance Creek before and wanted to check it out.

Last Chance Bay is huge, with lots of side canyons.

Spending a week on a house boat on Lake Powell is high on my bucket list.

Last Chance Bay ends and Last Chance Creek begins.

In this country, where there's a creek, there is usually a good canyon to fly.

Nice.

Only a little dry creek bed remains now.

This creek was like the energizer bunny; never ends.

Last Chance Creek meander to the north but I leave it to head for my destination:  Escalante Airport (1L7).

In the distrance, through this pass, is the Escalante Valley.

As I emerge into the valley, looking north.

And looking south.

Heading northwest up the valley, Escalante Airport is to the right of those green circles, at the base of that ridge.

And there it is, my home for the next two nights, Escalante Airport (1L7).  It was only 10AM.  What a flight!

When planning this trip, I knew I wanted to spend time exploring the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument area from the air.  I was looking for an airport I could use as a base of operations.  Page, Arizona was too expensive.  Carbon County airport was too far away.  But then I read the reviews for Escalante Airport on AirNav.com and Foreflight.  Camping on airport with great facilities -- hot shower, Wifi, even a courtesy car.  A town nearby for food.  Self-service avgas on field.  Perfect!

Parked on the ramp at Escalante.

The pilots lounge with courtesy car parked out front.  The lounge has Wifi, hot shower, snacks, coffee, cold water, Lazyboy recliner chair.

My tent set up near the pavilion.

The pavilion which contains a picnic table, chairs, refrigerator, electrical outlet, sink, gas grill.
